Natural Antioxidant Targets Flavor and Odor-sensitive Foods...
Kalsec has expanded its natural antioxidant range with what it claims is a near-tasteless and odorless rosemary extract designed to target new applications, including edible and frying oils, baked goods, and snacks.
Food manufacturers have been increasingly drawn to natural antioxidants for food preservation largely because they allow for clean label ingredient listings. Kalsec said that it is responding to this preference by building on the existing clean label Herbalox Seasoning range for extending shelf life in meats, fish, sauces, oils, drinks, and spices.
Kalsec's director of product development for natural antioxidants, Gary Augustine said: "Our customers were asking for a natural antioxidant that imparts little or no flavor to their finished product and now we are able to respond to their needs with XT." He also added: "The addition of XT to our portfolio allows us to offer our customers the broadest range of natural antioxidant solutions, with maximum oxidation control and a clean label."
Herbalox Seasoning XT - which would appear on a food label as 'rosemary extract', 'herb extract' or 'natural flavoring' - has been developed to minimize degradation in products that are sensitive to flavor and aroma, the company claims.

Solae Sustainability Initiative: Product Packaging Changes
Posted on 12-08-08
Solae announced a new initiative to reduce its environmental footprint. The global protein innovation company is changing all product packaging from bleached white bags to brown kraft paper bags.
"At Solae, we are actively pursuing a variety of efforts to reduce our environmental footprint to provide more valuable solutions for our customers," said Michele Fite, Solae vice president of global strategy and marketing.
Kraft paper, which is like the paper used in grocery store bags, is a 100 percent biodegradable natural product. The pulp is not bleached to ensure minimum chemical processing. Kraft paper decomposes naturally within a few weeks. Solae cusotmers can expect to begin seeing the new bags in December, with full packaging transitioned to the new bags by July 2009.
Packaging is not the only environmental sustainability program implemented by Solae. Its new LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - third party certification program run by the U.S. Green Building Council" certified global headquarters is a showcase for green building practices. Additionally, Solae is working to power its plants with innovative energy programs. In Esteio, Brazil, and Pryor, Oklahoma, the company is recovering energy from waste water treatment processes, and plans are under way to initiate changes like these across the globe.
Effective July 1, 2007, Provesta Flavor Ingredients located in Hutchinson, Minnesota and Boyceville, Wisconsin will merge with the business of Deutsche Hefewerke GmbH located in Hamburg, Germany and will trade under "Ohly Americas".

These guidelines should set the foundation for new efficiencies in the industry’s supply chain utilizing the EAN.UCC System for standard product identification and bar codes (data carriers).
The UCC, Uniform Code Council, Inc. and FIDA, Food Ingredient Distributors Association, were an integral part in developing these guidelines. Skidmore Sales is proud to be a part of FIDA and helping with this project.

Although Valley Sun of California has a sufficient supply of sun dried tomatoes in stock, they expect their domestic competitors to face a shortage this year. The 2001 tomato season was beset by weather problems that reduced the yield from 37.5 tons/acres in 2000 to a mere 33.6 tons/acre in 2001. With these reduced yields, growers were unable to satisfy their contracts with their major customers – the paste and canned tomato processors. Therefore, the spot market for processing tomatoes was virtually eliminated. Valley Sun is the only major dryer that contracts for its fresh tomato requirements. If you are interested in additional information or would like a price quote, please contact us. You may search tomatoes under Find Products to see the variety of products Valley Sun has to offer.
